Boston Public Library Trustees are first appointed.

The five members are former governor, former president of Harvard and current U.S. Secretary of State Edward Everett (chairman), former mayor John Bigelow, future mayor Nathaniel Shurtleff, and Harvard professors Thomas Gold Appleton and George Ticknor.
